"We have the means to destroy our world but not to escape it" Stephen Hawking

I have never really thought about this concept in this way. Here's what Hawkings said : "The concerns underlying these votes (BREXIT & TRUMP) about the economic consequences of globalisation and accelerating technological change are absolutely understandable. The automation of factories has already decimated jobs in traditional manufacturing, and the rise of artificial intelligence is likely to extend this job destruction deep into the middle classes, with only the most caring, creative or supervisory roles remaining.

This in turn will accelerate the already widening economic inequality around the world. The internet and the platforms that it makes possible allow very small groups of individuals to make enormous profits while employing very few people. This is inevitable, it is progress, but it is also socially destructive."

The problem is if 7.4 billion people all had a better life our destruction of the planet would only increase. Yes the rich consume more but they can only consume so much. If the other 85% had a comparable life to what an average first works citizen has things would fuck up very quickly.

Around 15% of us live in a developed country. We are causing the 6th mass extinction, resources are running out everywhere and climate change is only going to make things work. It is not possible for 7.4 billion people to have an adequate life on this planet. A better argument for our overpopulation of this planet I cannot think of.

Something like 75% of the world's resources are used by 20% of the people. Everything we do is to maximise business and consumer efficiency, often at the cost of vast waste and inefficiencies in other areas, like energy use and people's time.. "Uneconomic" food rots in the fields - half of all the food produced in the US goes to waste. That doesn't just waste food, but the fertiliser used to grow those crops (those resources are becoming depleted), precious topsoil loses quality (we're counting down the harvests that will last too) and the oil used for transport and machinery, which took millions of years to cook deep in the earth, will never be seen again by humans.

As far as science goes, I feel the experts have been shouted down for way too long, I understand perfectly that it's difficult to care when you have no job,no money, or if your job is tied in directly to not giving a shit, but the reality is, the shit will happen if you are comfortable or not, Nature just doesn't care that you are not interested in the latest Climate news, she will do her thing, and your opinion is utterly worthless. What Stephen is correct about is the inequality, but that is what you end up with when every single person, rich or poor, believes that the acquisition of wealth is the very reason for our existence, how much money you have is tied to your own self worth,no wonder everyone is miserable and great groups of humans are on the edge of suicide.

No one is in the mood for calm considered thought and debate. Emotional incontinence is raging and you need to talk to people in villages. Have a look at the interiors and you will see what it is that has to be dealt with. These people are not reasonable, they are not capable of reason. They don't want to listen, they want a fight.
