Visiting Mars and having a colony there are two very separate dreams, Settling there seems to be a story for the investors not a vision


The Martian atmosphere is 95-percent carbon dioxide. It is only 0.13-percent oxygen, far less than the 21 percent available on Earth. The atmosphere is also nearly 100 times thinner than Earth's, meaning Mars cannot retain the radiant heat of the sun, so while late afternoon at the Martian equator may be a comfortable 70 F, at night the temperature would fall to 100 F below zero.
Since humans have lived in space for extended periods of time in ships or orbital station, it's reasonable to suppose that life on Mars is also possible. This assumes that Earth-like atmosphere and temperatures, as well as food and water, can be provided, but providing such an environment on Mars would be enormously expensive. Even more costly would be the constant trips to Mars to resupply the colony. While it is possible that a self-sustaining colony could be designed and constructed sometime in the future, the technology does not currently exist to make a Martian colony feasible.

Is this not an extraordinary waste of money and resources to go to a dead planet, spend the money and time on Earth, we know less about the oceans and they are full of life and resources. I have to question the true motives here, is it to escape, is it to claim mining rights on another planet? So many suffering and SpaceX want to get as far away as possible.

For some reason, human space travel is seen as a zero sum game by you lot, we spend money on space instead of on feeding the poor, apparently. We spend a lot more on pointless distractions like the Olympics and weapons etc. Space, in return, gives us a view of our place in the universe, it gave birth to the environmental movement and to the awareness we now have of how fragile our planet is and how we have to take care of it. It reminds us that we are a species of explorers, who seek out new frontiers.

Sorry but I have to disagree. What has space travel actually spawned industries. It did not create computers, the Internet nor the materials that is uses. I will safely say we will no be on Mars in six years. Just I'd say no man will step on the moon by the end of this decade. This year I think is the 50th year since man stepped on the moon.

The human species needs visionaries. Even if not successful, he will, by raising awareness and enthusiasm, and delving into the tough engineering problems associated with spaceflight, play a part in the eventual evolution of man into a space-faring species. We'll get there sooner because of guys like him, even if he doesn't take us all the way.

I applaud his dream. So far, all man has done is go to the Moon and spent time in a space station not far from the Earth. We have sent probes which is the best way to learn more, but as for us - all we have done is to dip a toe in the ocean of infinite space. I hope to be reborn at a time when humans really can travel further. It takes dreamers to dream what seems impossible, and to make them happen. Long may the dreamers dream of the marvellous.

And what is that landing on a pad? This was done before with other devices. The question is, is it cheaper, is it save. Previous attempts for engine reuse was the space shuttle. It failed. Unfortunately , he did not present any solution for the travel related problems and the support problems and the sustainable living problems. True he wanted to outline his plan, but no one can solve all these problems in 6 years.

It is great that we have people like Musk that have a grand vision for the Human species. Whatever you might think of him, he is, in the end, a quintessential risk taker, who will push the boundaries, or at least, make others push boundaries of human achievements. He aims to start the first payloads to Mars in as little as 2 years. While his 2025 target for humans is a bit ambitious, I do think 2030s is a safe bet for the first humans to walk another planet. In any case, it is heartening to see people like Musk disrupt the military industrial complex that has long had a monopoly over rocket technology, and which has been loath to any innovation since the 60s.

Isn’t it true that we can’t live on many places on Earth like The South Pole or greenland? On the other hand it is rather absurdly hyperbolic to then say we might need a backup location to live in case Climate Change makes Earth inhabitable. What on Earth? As for terraforming on the one hand people have suggested seeding Mars well before we try to live there in numbers. On the other hand there’s loosing significant scientific value as we do as much more change as the asteroid heavy bombardment even if by side affect.
