Shouldn't there have been a public payments app in place ?

Rather than the topmost echelons of the government becoming a spokesperson for paytm. ( if this was being actually planned for 6 months )

And this is a transgression at 2 levels

1. payments app as a caregory to settle transactions being forced on ppl

2. Paytm as a solution in the payments app category over 20 such similar payment apps

What interest does govt has in building it's own payment app when paytm servers the purpose well.

Modi also endorsed it

But thats exactly the point. How can a topmost government functionary promote a particular payment mechanism / and a particular provider within that mechanism to the public at large. To extend this argument, we can do away with the elaborate public tendering process for all public goods and simply have the PM endorse one favorite in all domains.

Modi never endorsed it. He's just informed the audience that there is an alternate way for payments and they need not worry about the huge hue and cry created by the media. Its a gimmick created by the media.

Time and again it has been proved that private sector enterprises do well as compared to public ones, TCS handles the passport office now and everyone is praising that too.

Aren't we mixing things up here. TCS won a bid to do that through transparent tendering. I mean maybe there was some consideration as India was corrupt back then. But there is a process for a private enterprise to engage with public goods.

Agreed, i am not comparing the processes since paytm officially is not dealing with public affairs at all. Reliance and Jio have used Modi's vision and boosted their network, theres nothing wrong about that, but in no way has Modi promoted either of the private companies is what i am saying.

And the point of getting TCS into the picture what to emphasise the productivity of private sectors, thus it should not be an issue at all

For the data scientist in us there are convenient correlations to draw between massively large capital and the the supposed vision. It's a bit unfair on other payment apps as well as even other non cash mechanisms including of the state run banks. And it's another debate whether non cash mechanisms ought to be imposed through Diikait.

They should have done a lot more in planning but to mantain the secrecy of the whole mission

It was quite easy as govt to promote a payments app amongst people. In what way would it have compromised the secrecy of this mission. Aren't we using secrecy as a blanket garb to condone private profit booking. Stories abound of private companies/ banks and CAs minting a fortune in the last 2 weeks ( both in black and white )
