Digitization forcing a shift from product to interaction design

A relative of mine, let's call her X, did her undergrad in product design. X was top of the batch, loved her work and worked on the most fascinating projects in companies such as D.light, Philips etc. Recently though, X had an epiphany of sorts, that communication/ interaction design is the way things will go in the future. She dropped her job and joined a Masters in Communication design course in Umea University.

My doubt, almost a worry, is that is industrial design going to become obsolete in the future? With everything going the way of technology, it's logical to fear that products, or the weightage on their design, will become obsolete. If not, in what scenario will industrial design still thrive, independent of interaction design?

Pressure of educational loans vs grind of experiential learning

But I feel that the education system should have more incentives for people to grind and learn through experiences, rather than make them feel that they've missed their train.
