China's relationship with UK 'at risk' over Hinkley Point delay

China has warned Britain that the relationship between the two countries is at a "critical juncture" and will be at risk unless it goes ahead with the Hinkley Point nuclear power station. Theresa May, the Prime Minister, delayed a final decision on plans for Britain's first new nuclear power station for a decade last month amid concerns about Chinese investment.

The Western caricature of Chinese internet firms needs a reboot

Google left, Facebook is blocked, Amazon is struggling to make headway. And if further proof were needed that China’s tech market is a world apart, this week seemed to provide conclusive evidence. Uber, a ride-hailing service that is the world’s most valuable startup, decided to sell its local unit to Didi Chuxing, a Chinese rival. Chinese firms are protected from external competition by government regulation and the Great Firewall. And that protection means that they need not innovate but can thrive by copying business models developed in the West. In short, China is closed, its firms are cosseted and their talent is for mimicry.

Being vegan isn’t as environmental friendly as you think. Do the math.

Using biophysical simulation models to compare 10 eating patterns, researchers found that eating fewer animal products will increase the number of people that can be supported by existing farmland. But as it turns out, eliminating animal products altogether isn’t the best way to maximize sustainable land use. Their work was published in Elementa, a journal on the science of the anthropocene.

There are some surprising and unpleasant downsides to thinking you are the centre of the universe. We living through a narcissism epidemic

We can probably all recognise those attention-seeking people in our lives – and increasingly it seems in politics and pop culture – who have a hugely inflated sense of their own importance and abilities, combined with a relative disregard for other people’s. Psychologists call them narcissists, after the character Narcissus from Greek mythology, who fell in love with his own reflection. But the fact that narcissists are inwardly fragile is not the only reason to feel sorry for them. Another line of research suggests that behaving the way they do is going to make life stressful for them.

India is Neglecting the Indian Workers in West Asian Countries

Thousands of Indian workers, most of whom worked construction jobs, haven’t been paid in seven months. The Indian consulate in Jeddah set up a food line for workers near labor camps, passing out rice, onions, and cooking oil. Sushma Swaraj, the Indian minister of external affairs, said her government was working to help. The conglomerate Saudi Oger Ltd. employed many of the stranded Indian workers, and holds on to their passports, as is the case with low-income migrant workers throughout the Middle East. The company, according to some of the Indian workers, will only return their passports back when they buy a ticket back home to India. Until then, they are stranded in Saudi Arabia.

Every National Media ensures manipulation of the news for its own propaganda. It’s vital to look at all media, including the UK’s, with a critical eye
