Is feminism a misused term or the need of the hour?

Idealistically speaking I am an equalist not a feminist i.e. I feel both men and women should have equal rights, opportunities, equal pay and leave. I say this because there are some places where people are taking advantage of others in the name of feminism, hence the growing bad reputation.
