Patriotism: What it really means?

Indus Valley Civilization is well known for its trade, drainage system and urban planning. People then would have had great love for hygiene and promoted social empowerment through trade and indeginous crafts. Thus they were also true patriots. In the absence of any statehood, they owed allegiance to social empowerment. Even after nearly 4000 years, Modern India has failed to emulate their principles of hygiene and urban planning. In the Rig Vedic age, people owed their allegiance to their tribe. People of this age were primitive and land was not considered a property till then. In Rig Vedic age, protecting fellow tribesmen during external aggression would have been considered as an act of patriotism.

There is a difference between Patriotism and Pseudo-Patriotism. Pseudo patriotism is to support the leaders and the govt. blindly in the name of nation. A true patriot is not only who hoists the tricolour and daily sings the National anthem, but also who is Rational and has courage to stand with the True ideals and values of the country on which any nation is build upon. Thus if a man who is rational and is aware of the ideals of humanity will never support the traditions and the laws which violate the basic human values. But while opposing the society and govt. one should be very careful. A man should first clearly define his Primary Identity in a broad manner and thus his oppose should not be influenced by his greed or personal interests. Neither the protests should be limited to a single incident. For ex. The people who are ashamed for the intolerance against the intellectuals and minority must also feel shame for the Migration of Kashmiri Pandits and for the displacement of the Assam peoples in the past. There should be no Hypocrisy in the values and ideals of a true Patriot. In a true democracy the citizens have every right to exercise Civil Disobedience. But That should also be the last way after trying other methods of protests. Disobeying the law of land which we disagree is different thing and to oppose every govt. order in name of Civil disobedience is a different thing and thus it must be avoided. Thats why Patriotism requires not only courage but also rationality. Courage for accepting the wrongdoings and rationality to know what is wrong and what is right.

Its not a blind love which requires one to just appreciate its positive achievements. It requires a person to have a free, rational thinking to raise voice against the socio-economic injustices . This is essential to bring out reforms to make country better nation which values inclusiveness and social justice. One could be ashamed for certain happenings taking place in the country. For instance,When the abhorrently horrific Nirbhaya case happened, it gained world wide attention. Governments tried to play-down the seriousness of growing women insecurity as it would bring shame to country and hit tourism. This is not patriotism. It is looking at the positive rosy picture ignoring the fact that a crime drastically horrific takes place in country which claims to worship women as deities. Patriotism is to be intolerant to growing tolerance towards women crime, dalit oppression , tribal exploitation, widening inequality or increasing pollution . This would bring attention towards the problems being faced by common public so that efforts could be taken to allay fears among marginalised weaker sections and provide a country for which everyone is proud of in every aspect.

Patriotism is ones emotional attachment to the homeland. Despite its definition, Patriotism has a wide canvas of value, beliefs and responsibilities. Examples of patriotism lie from a soldier sacrificing his life for the nation to a common man fighting the urge to litter the streets. In simple words, a true patriot is the one which upholds the ideals of the country and possesses true dedication to his/her duty towards the homeland. While drawing the line between patriotism and jingoism, there are two things worth noting. Firstly, people speaking against the status quo or the incumbent government cannot be termed unpatriotic i.e. being anti-government is not synonymous to being anti-national. Secondly, Showering accolades over the heritage, history, bravery is not the only way to depict ones patriotic feelings. A person saying he is ashamed of his country or expressing his fear over the present situation of the nation, cannot be branded as a traitor. On the contrary, a true patriot will internalise the criticism, respecting the ideals of our democracy, and work towards filling the gaps in the value system of the society A patriot is not just a person expressing his pride in his nation, but the one who has the courage to find faults in it, speak freely against it, and act towards rectifying the faults. Expressing ones shame towards ones own country does not mean that he or she hates the country but is apprehensive about the actions of few sections of the society and inability of State to act against them.

True patriotism requires us to know and acknowledge what are the good and bad things about our country and society. Person who only talks about good and put aside any criticism of their country is rather a chauvinist. Every society has some shortcoming. But as we move forward we overcome such shortcoming and evolve as a better society. Much like the evolution in organism which is a continuous process. Under the name of patriotism if you ignore such shortcoming or curb the space for criticism about such shortcomings then your society will not evolve or wont be able to acquire necessary change and it will perish. Our country will have more conservatives and less liberals. As a responsible citizen it is our duty towards building a progressive and prosperous country. For that if needed we have the right to criticise. But this criticism should not be based on distorted facts. We should be rational and constructive in our criticism. Everyone should be tolerant towards others view and work together with other citizens towards solving our weakness. Criticism which incites violence, creates public disorder should be curbed. Thus a true patriot should be able to say that he is ashamed of following shortcomings of the country much like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Arundhati Roy etc. But he should do it in a responsible manner such that it doesnt create a atmosphere of anxiety and the story of partition gets repeated.

When we say I am ashamed of it then that means that we repent a certain fact. Now, when we use this same phrase in matter of our country, then it brings two aspects either I am ashamed of my country because I am a fault finder who loves to find fault in his own motherland while praising other countries and their developed state, Or I am genuinely ashamed because I am part of my country and I feel that I am myself responsible for this state and I want to contribute to nation to remove the shame from its face. True patriotism means, when we say that we are ashamed of child marriages, farmer suicides, female foeticide, acute poverty, communal riots, intolerance against other religions, attacks on lower caste people etc because we have done nothing till this date to fight these and to make my country better. I will feel patriotic if I am able to educate one poor child, if I am able to disseminate information about girls importance in life, if I am able to open an NGO helping poor women in rural areas. Shame wont go by migrating to prosperous countries such as America or UK. It will still haunt those who are coward. Indians will get respect in other civilisations and in eyes of themselves only when we fight our problems and come on winning side. This will require co-operative effort from Government, civil society, and most importantly those patriotic citizens who feel ashamed about these problems and want to do something to eliminate these problems.
