One reason Indian Colleges are not the best in the world is the immense focus on Politics

Students should always be focusing on their rights but instead, they are manipulated by politicians of all parties and fight the fights of their political masters. Indian politics is a dirty reality. Do we want this dirt to pile up in our haloed educational institutions? They may be disturbed by all the agitations around them but they are absolutely powerless. The silent majority of students who just want to focus on their education and career are hijacked by the political minority who call the shots.

Politics at universities should be a matter of concern for a different reason as the new class of poltical leaders at university level have direct relationship with national and state level political parties and thus they are also being affected by the parochial political rhetoric of caste , religion , class , regional ,ethnic and various other kind of identity politics. This does not augur well for a nation where new generation of political leaders are supposed to bring about a productive and forward looking transformation in national and regional political discourses. But it is surely not the factor for our low ranking in World’s Top Universities List.

Yes, politics is one of the reason to lagging global rank of Indian universities worldwide. The corruption in implementation of govt schemes, planning and policies towards universities creates a vacuum.Along with politics, Economic of India is also a major factor for global rank of Indian universities, economic gap between developed and developing countries.

When the Top University list is prepared a lot is focused on the amount of R&D budget and the patents gathered by the students in a campus. In our country we recognise the college by the highest pay package it's student get that sums up the difference that despite the IIT and IIM are dream institutions here they dont lie in the world's list.
Obviously politics is there which sets up those institutes, appoints teachers and most importantly VCs which is currently a sheer political appointment. The fund allocation is also biased and its the TEQIP, Gates Foundation etc. are really providing better support to the Indian Universities than the government itself. But,the problem is if we get all the resources in India itself the answer to how many students opting for research is very crucial. We still prefer to be an engineer in MNC than a teacher at a school. The issue is the money minded mindset and social taboo of 90%.

I disagree with the point saying IIT or IIM toppers do not make it big, trust me they do. Most good IITans go to US universities and do really well there. You just don't hear about them because people are not that involved in science. IGBT was invented by an IITan. Now the question remains as to why so many IITans go to US and do not do anything good here. Simple, the facilities and money for research is simply not there. Endowments for Harvard and MIT are like a 100k times that of any IIT, why would anyone who is serious about his/ her research wait here.

Politics is the articulation of views, their expression and mobilisation of masses to take part in the democratic processes of the country. In that sense it also has a pedagogical aspect for it contributes in the formation of opinions which is possible only after the scrutiny of the prevailing circumstances. Politics at university level helps in political socialisation of students. Through political activities they become the integral part of democratic process and are able to appreciate the democratic practices in more productive manner. Politics helps in institutionalisation of discourse, dialogue and debate as the means for resolution of conflicting ideas, which is also the foundational principle of deliberative and participative democracy. It is also through student politics that nation gets its new generation of leaders well equipped with political aptitude with a good formal educational background.
