Manchester United needs Ibrahimovic to offer more than four goals and a dressing-room presence. They want a star striker who can lead the attack

Clearly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a reputation. And rightly so. His swagger has echoes of Eric Cantona and the Swede's mere presence would inspire belief. After all, Ibrahimovic was lifting league titles with Ajax before Marcus Rashford had started school. He is trusted by Jose Mourinho - a man he claims to speak to on the phone "every day" - and could be an important conduit in a dressing room curious about the new coach, rather than in his thrall. An experienced figure "willing to kill" for Mourinho might well prove vital.

A season or two of Zlatan at United is a no brainer in many ways. He may struggle initially with the insane pace of the league, but he will quickly realise that we dont really do defending or tactics in England. He will have fun then. Zlatan had it too easy in France and is unlikely to be able to stride into United and start ordering everyone around. Hes probably smart enough to realise that, but in the past he hasnt reacted that well when he isnt the focal point of the entire club. There is the exciting possibility that a Zlatan/Mourinho combination could go completely and utterly tits up. If United had gone for both 3 or 4 seasons ago there would be less doubt. The reputation of both men as winners at all costs should reassure and excite United fans after the mediocre toss served up under Moyes and LvG, but they are probably less of a guarantee of winning than they were. They are still a long way behind City I would say. Chelsea maybe too. Obviously Liverpool tying up big Alex Manninger all but guarantees us a top 4 place. We got one over Jose with that one big time.

It may not work for many players but it works for Ibrahimovic in every dressing room he walks into. Only two seasons in which his team didnt win the league (one being when he was 21 and the other being Juves Invincibles season). You dont need every single player staying late to train with him, what you need is an atmosphere where people arent shrugging their shoulders when they lose and saying "oh well on to next week lads" or "fourth will be a decent result in a season of transition". Zlatan guarantees that. Serge Aurier is incredibly lucky that hes still in a job after calling his boss a "faggot" on social media. Nobody cares what he thinks about Ibrahmovic. He should spend every morning of his life sending a card to Ibrahimovic thanking him for making it possible for a mediocre right-back and extremely unintelligent man to own a top division winners medal.

I think Ibrahimovic could prove to be a masterstroke of a signing. He is exactly what Man United need right now, a born winner with an arrogant attitude. If theres anybody to set the highest standards, look no further than this Swedish genius, Mourinho couldnt have picked a better player for the younger players to learn from, Rashford and Martial are in for a surprise. Rooney will thrive again as some of the pressure can finally be taken off him to produce the goods week in week out. It will intriguing to see where Mourinho will fit Rooney in to accommodate Zlatan. Attacking-wise, Man United look ridiculously and excitingly dangerous, and with the potential signing of Pogba to provide the steel in midfield that they have so badly lacked in recent years, they surely must be favourites for the title. My only concern is the defence. Luke Shaw will only get better, but they need a right back and possibly a central defender to partner Bailly andSmalling as cover , Jones is a liability with his injuries and we dont know much about Bailly. Fosu-Mensah could fill the void at right back if he is given the chance given his promising showings last season but if he goes on loan, then Valencia cant be expected to play every game. Other options such as Rojo are available but hes not been good enough and Blind is not a centre back. I hope to see a bit more of Depay, as he hasnt really been given the chance to justify his hefty fee yet, and Mkhytaryan looks the business.
