It was a win-win for both Uber and Didi as Uber quits China

Uber Technologies Inc. is selling its China operations to fierce rival Didi Chuxing, ending an expensive price war and freeing it up to focus on other markets and possibly an initial public offering. The truce brings to an end a bruising battle between the two companies for leadership in China’s fast-growing ride-hailing market. Uber has already lost $2 billion in China in two years there, people familiar with the matter have said, prompting investors to pressure the company to cut a deal.

Uber can compete effectively in markets where the taxi businesses were protected by various laws which Uber utterly disregards and can get away with. For example San Francisco. A Taxi license is quite expensive to get and whoevers buys one needs to recoup the investment making fares relatively expensive. Enter Uber with its battery of lawyers shortcutting all this necessary investment. Becomes very successful.

The problem with Uber in China isnt the lack of a market for this kind of services, as a number of local companies are doing well. Taxis in ie Shanghai are cheap, but grab a ride using didi is even cheaper. There is also the problem of availability, get a cab in China at rush hours can be a nerve-breaking, Herculean task. So there is clearly a market, but owing to a series of circumstances Uber couldnt compete with Chinese companies. Chinese market is a very special one, you had to know how to use a whole new set of promotion tools, craft an offer that resonate in a different kind of public and ride the waves of a mercurial legal framework.

Didi offers so quick responses, many wonderful services, cheap price, and much better consumer experience than Uber. Anyone ever tried Didi will dump Uber. Consumers always give their money to the best company, no matter in India or China. This is why IPhones are still the most desired smart phones. The same story for Facebook, although the internet Wall is one of the reasons, but even if Facebook gets into China now, it wont have any chance to beat Wechat, which provides much better user experience than Facebook

By fighting so aggressively for two years, Uber secured a strong negotiating position. The San Francisco company will not only gain $1bn in investment from Didi through the deal, but will also take a 17.7% stake in Didi while still maintaining its brand in China.

Didi had been starting to form partnerships outside China, choosing to work with (and invest $100m in) Lyft in the US. That deal meant that when Didis Chinese customers were travelling in the US, they could summon a car through Lyfts app, and vice-versa for Lyfts customers in China. We dont know whats going to happen to Lyft now that Uber is one of Didis biggest investors, but its unlikely to be positive. Left openly said "Over the next few weeks, we will evaluate our partnership with Didi”.
