India has always boasted about its cultural diversity, but looking at our surroundings can we actually be sure about the concept of "Unity in Diversity"?

India is a place where there is a vast diversity in terms of Religion, Language, cultures, food, music. It is also known as a subcontinent. But what if we had only 2-3 main languages and cultures? That would have made it a lot easier to communicate and relate to things all over the nation. Had there been one main religion there wouldn't be religious politics.
IMO if we did not have such a great diversity, India would have developed way faster than it is today.

India’s diversity is unique in terms of its enormity. Diversity at such a scale is not found anywhere in the world. Understood earlier as a weakness of our country especially when the country was divided into two, we managed to show the world in a democratic polity that this diversity is the greatest thing we or any country in the world can have.
An example of Sri-Lanka and India’s comparative study can be given here where the former tried to create a one language nation by imposing Sinhalese on its people where on the other hand India created a state on linguistic lines and started a domino effect for the creation of states. While Sri Lanka had gone into a civil war, India remained at peace at the macro level and even fought and won over the external aggressions.

You are right that SriLanka tried to impose one language across the nation which india has not, though making Hindi a national language was in the blueprint of newly independent India but we could not make it because of vehement opposition from Dravidian parties. We can see across the world that diversity can not be the strength, it can be neutral at the best. Take our example- we can not have a national language because we have so many languages, we can not have uniform civil code because we have many religions(two which have diametrically opposite views) and uniform civil code might hurt their religious feelings.

We wanted to make Hindi the national language because of the fear of the creation of many more Pakistans.
But If you take the position of we Indians during the early 1930s, we were OK with the creation of states on the basis of language. (Karachi session I am talking about). I differ on the point when you say that Diversity is neutral at best. I think that USA is a diverse country and holds the position of world's most powerful country.

If we are to impose a national language, shouldnt it be English. It is an Indian language more than a British language now.

And what is your criteria of thinking this? Only 10% people in India know English! I dont think there is a need to have a unified language for India. Apart from the slow learning curve that will take its own sweet time, there is a ;lot of rigidity as well. South Indians wont learn Hindi or similar language and vice-versa with North Indians. Its too Utopian a thought.

INDIA is diversified with various religions and their cultures & languages. It gave birth to new religions like Jainisim, Budhisim & Sikhisim out of Hinduism and even welcomed Islam & Christianity though they were from alien land. Rulers of India from medieval to modern era were benefited using religion politics, the same even continued post Independence to woo innocents for power. Ignorance, low empowerment, Illiteracy were observed as the causes for flourishing of divide and rule or caste based politics. India & pakistan were divided based on more or less religions.

"Indian unity is not something imposed from the outside but rather it was something deeper and within its fold, the widest tolerance of belief and custom was practised and every variety acknowledged and even encouraged. This suggests that despite of having geographical, language and cultural differences, people of India are living with peace with respect for each others traditions and with unity." Quoting our first PM
