If the Quran as a received text is perfect, why are hadith and sunnah so valued?


I'm not a Quranist and have no skin in the game, but don't you think it's odd that there is so much focus on the Prophet and that every religion inevitably turns to veneration of the Word-giver? Like why would Allah deliberately make interpretation so murky and prone to fitna? I'm not Muslim and am just trying to get a picture of your opinions.

The Quran isn't your typical science book. It sometimes is very straightforward and explicit, sometimes it is open to interpretation and sometimes it is impossible for anyone to understand. (Alif, Lam, Mim)

When it comes to explaining why we were created, what is our purpose, what is the right path, what is right and what is wrong, what will happen to us after we die, the Quran is extremely clear and it is not open to interpretation. This is the foundation of the book and it explains all that stuff perfectly. There are explicit verses, stories AND parables.

3.7 It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah . But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

When we say the Quran is perfect, we must think about what it is perfect for. A chair is perfect for sitting but not for sleeping. The Quran does not explain how to pray but it does explain why we must pray, why it is a very important pillar of Islam and what will happen to those who don't pray.

If as a human being you want to know the meaning of life then the Quran is perfect for that. For the details you must refer to the verses with "obey the Messenger".

For one, this isn't true, because the Quran does mention times of prayer, how to purify yourself for prayer, and various poses one can assume for prayer.

Two, and more importantly, your point doesn't make any sense. You are essentially saying, "there are topics in the Quran that aren't broken down into excruciating detail, therefore we must use tertiary sources to supplement the Quran". This doesn't follow at all.

Does the Quran command us to seek out these details in tertiary sources like Hadith? No. Do we even know if such details are important? No.

If a book exists that claims to be the final and only un-corrupted source of God's teachings, covers various topics with varying degrees of detail, and says no more about it, it seems logical to infer that anything not covered is either unimportant, or too obvious to merit specific mention.

The leap you made to adding "details" with tertiary sources like Hadith is an unnatural one; a result of working backwards to justify your use of Hadith, rather than a logical inference one makes while reading the Quran.

Let me give you an example, because I also used to think like you. The Quran talks about Hajj and how you should "observe the rights of Hajj" and talks about the months when you observe the rights. The Quran does not actually give a detailed account of the actual rights of Hajj, they are simply referenced. Prophet Muhammad SAW would send people such as Ali ibn Abi Talib RA and Abu Bakr RA to teach people how to do Hajj, and in the Prophets own Hajj, which he performed only once, he showed us exactly how to do Hajj, step by step, These actions were recorded and memorized and spread and later on compiled by geniuses like Bukhari, who probably had photographic memory as he could look at a page of Hadith and memorize everything including the isnads(chain of narration). This is how we know how to do Hajj, the Quran tells us it's a requirements but we follow the Prophet SAW to know how to do it. The Quran states in many places to obey Allah SWT and his Messenger SAW and that's exactly what we do. Obviously in Prophet SAWs time there were no Hadith collection, when people had questions they would go to the Prophet SAW and ask, and observe his actions. We look to the recorded life of Prophet SAW to do exactly what those in his time would do when they had questions.
