Ever-faster feedback loops and micro-targeted digital porn are pushing human sexuality into some seriously weird places

Sexuality has always operated in tandem with pornography. Pornography tends to crystallise desires that you might not have articulated. Humanity hasn’t yet worked out how it feels about the internet’s effect on our collective sexuality. Some see it as a liberating force, opening us up to new levels of pleasure, satisfaction and self-understanding.

I am someone that grew up almost contemporaneously with the popular Internet, perhaps my years marching a little ahead of the Internets. Thats to say that I have almost no memory of life before the Internet, and certainly no sexual memory before the Internet none whatsoever. I wonder how that will affect my generation in the long run? Pornography has always been amazingly accessible to my cohort and not just the vanilla stuff of course. I suppose the major danger of such a porn-saturated net is that the chances of young person happening upon some extra-creative kind of porn is enormous now, as is all the troubling surprise this could cause. Beyond that though, I wonder what the simple availability of porn does on the scale of generations. I’m reminded of the scene in Brighton Beach Memoirs (1930s) when Eugene is given an old postcard depicting a naked French woman – and how monumentally exciting this is for him. Talk about sexual awakening! But you show that postcard to a pubescent teenager that’s grown up in the internet age? I can’t imagine that postcard would hold much interest. Whether through desensitisation or an expectation of technicolor streamable movement, who knows. But this sort of mismatch between how teenagers of various eras were exposed to sex seems to me an interesting one.

I dont think internet has changed me much, except maybe to highlight the fact that everyone else is a lot kinkier between their ears than between their sheets too. Theres no way people are engaging in the sex they are wanting to the extent they are watching it. Sex is sex, porn is fantasy. It has probably ever been thus. If you watch vintage porn or read old pornographic novels, the kink is pretty consistent with modern kink. I have seen margin drawings from medieval psalters which are pretty filthy, sexually explicit roman murals and statues, Asian temple reliefs of every possible copulative combination you could imagine and thats just the stuff I have absorbed through cultural osmosis, I havent exactly searched anything out. I suspect that, if its imaginable, people have been imagining it since time immemorial.

This can be a start of another American way of building industry. Alter habits of sexuality to an extent that humans become incompetent to satisfy other humans and introduce AI bots (as sex partners) who in turn read more data of physical movements, moaning, time of orgasm, to enhance itself and make humans more incompetent.
